AFRICA: Millions pumped into Global AIDS Fund
JOHANNESBURG, 8 Oct 2004 (PLUSNEWS) - Sweden has pledged more than US $2 million to the Global AIDS Fund in response to an appeal from former South African President Nelson Mandela.
The latest cash boost brings Sweden's contribution to the Fund to just over $75 million since 2004.
South African news agency, BuaNews, quoted the Swedish Minister for International Development Cooperation, Carin Jamtin, as saying: "We have great confidence in the Global Fund as an important financing mechanism and are happy to make this extra contribution."
Mandela had appealed to various governments, pointing out that although the Fund had made huge progress in supporting HIV and AIDS projects, it was still not enough to keep up with the pace of the pandemic.
