KENYA: Education ministry losing teachers to HIV/AIDS
JOHANNESBURG, 5 Apr 2004 (PLUSNEWS) - Kenya loses five of its 235,000 teachers daily as a result of HIV/AIDS, the Ministry of Education has said.
Education permanent secretary Prof Karega Mutahi, told a local newspaper, The East African Standard, there was a large number of HIV-positive teachers and many others were already bed-ridden.
He said this had affected teaching and student performance in both primary and secondary schools.
"If the HIV/AIDS infection and death rates among teachers are not stopped, their important societal role will be diminished," Mutahi said.
