KENYA: Free anti-AIDS drugs for thousands in 2005

JOHANNESBURG, 16 Feb 2004 (PLUSNEWS) - About 140,000 people living with HIV/AIDS in Kenya will receive free anti-AIDS treatment by 2005, the US deputy ambassador to Kenya, Leslie Rowe, has said.

The antiretroviral drugs would be made available through funds already allocated to Kenya by the US government, Ambassador Rowe said, while the Kenyan government has assured the US that the set target would be realised on time.

A local newspaper, the Daily Nation, quoted Rowe as saying: "This is a tremendous commitment from the Kenyan government. We will be working closely with them to ensure that the goal of making HIV/AIDS drugs available is realised."
