AFRICA: Support urged for AIDS orphan campaign

JOHANNESBURG, 9 Dec 2003 (PLUSNEWS) - An international social justice organisation, the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC), has launched a campaign to assist children orphaned by HIV/AIDS in the Manica province of Mozambique.

Research shows that the country is home to an estimated 500,000 maternal AIDS orphans.

The national director of AFSC's Emergency and Material Assistance Programme, Shahina Malik, said in a statement: "It becomes a responsibility for all of us in the developed world to help build an environment that is conducive to the rehabilitation and development of children affected by this dreaded disease."

For more information about pledges for the campaign, which runs through 15 March 2004, contact Omar Ibrahem, at 215-241-7023 or log on at: www.afsc.org.
