ZIMBABWE: Food aid for hungry HIV-positive people

JOHANNESBURG, 9 Dec 2003 (PLUSNEWS) - Zimbabweans living with HIV/AIDS are set to benefit from a US $3.4 million emergency food aid programme recently launched by the British government.

The programme aims to target both rural and urban areas in Zimbabwe by means of funds channelled through the UK's Department for International Development (DFID).

The deputy programme manager of DFID in Zimbabwe, Joanne Manda, told the UN news service PlusNews that emergency aid would be provided as food rations mainly to vulnerable households receiving home-based HIV/AIDS care.

With an estimated 5.5 million people needing food aid in Zimbabwe, the programme is also expected to assist people who are not living with HIV/AIDS.
