IRIN's HIV/AIDS news service, PlusNews, is looking for an experienced, dynamic and committed bilingual editor-in-chief to develop a new Portuguese language service to cover the five African lusophone countries of Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea Bissau, Mozambique, and São Tome and Principe.

PlusNews is one of the largest sources of original reporting on HIV/AIDS in Africa. This project aims to create an entirely new service in Portuguese to cover a region poorly served by the international media. The Portuguese editorial unit will be based in IRIN's Southern Africa bureau in Johannesburg.

Under the overall supervision of the PlusNews Global Coordinator, the editor-in-chief of the Portuguese service will perform the following duties:

• Generate cutting-edge news, features and analysis in Portuguese from lusophone Africa
• Commission copy from a network of stringers in the region, grow the network, and provide mentoring to the contributors
• Supervise Portuguese-English/English-Portuguese translations
• Travel in the region, as necessary, to undertake specialist reporting assignments and conduct media training
• Maintain cooperation with other UN agencies, the media and NGO networks to improve the flow of information on HIV/AIDS and market the service
• Work with the IRIN web team to develop and improve PlusNews Portuguese website features

Skills and Experience Required

You will be a senior journalist with at least eight years of experience and a university degree or equivalent. You will be able to speak English and Portuguese fluently. You will have a strong interest in HIV/AIDS and a working knowledge of key issues, debates and strategies, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. You will have experience of managing other journalists, running teams and commissioning work. Experience of working in Africa would be a considerable advantage.

ActionAid International (AAI) is looking for a Regional HIV/AIDS Policy and Advocacy Officer. The position reports to Africa Regional HIV/AIDS Coordinator with functional links to the International HIV/AIDS Policy and Campaign Officer.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Responsible for spearheading the development of a prioritised regional HIV/AIDS policy, advocacy and campaign agenda and strengthening and deepening policy analysis of HIV/AIDS
• Build and strengthen the technical capacity of policy staff in mainstreaming HIV/AIDS, analysis in development policy, the impact of HIV/AIDS on poverty and development sectors, and the development of national and regional campaigns.
• Responsible for building regional-level partnerships, collaborations, alliances and networks in order to further AAI's policy in relation to HIV/AIDS in the Africa region
• Engage with regional and subregional intergovernmental bodies (ECA, AU, NEPAD, SADC) and other strategic policy platforms.

REQUIREMENTS:

• A degree in a relevant field, passionate about HIV/AIDS and an activist who can deliver cutting-edge policy on HIV/AIDS in an effective and timely manner
• Dynamic, self-driven, flexible and motivated person, able to work in a fast-paced environment with multiple accountabilities and minimum supervision
• A proven track record in the field in programming, campaign or technical expertise, with at least 3 years' experience
• Knowledge of the epidemic and current response is important, as well as the link that exists between HIV/AIDS and poverty eradication programmes is desirable
