1. Seminar: HIV/AIDS and Trauma

The Specialist Resource for Traumatic Stress Practitioners in Southern Africa is hosting a seminar on "HIV/AIDS and Trauma". Speaker Pierre Brouard, a clinical psychologist who has worked in the field of HIV/AIDS for the past 14 years, is currently the Deputy Director of the Centre for the Study of AIDS at the University of Pretoria.

Using Brouard's experiences, the seminar will compare HIV counselling and trauma counselling, how trauma theory informs HIV counselling and the unique aspects that HIV and AIDS bring to trauma work and theory, as well as how aspects of resilience and coping might affect reactions to an HIV positive diagnosis.

Date: 23 April 2004
Time: 2 pm to 4 pm (registration at 1.30)
Venue: Venus Room, Observatory Training & Conference Centre, 18a Gill St, Observatory, Johannesburg.

Fee: R30 per participant to cover costs will be collected at the door on the day of the seminar.

2. Symposium: Research on HIV/AIDS in the Workplace

The HIV/AIDS in the Workplace Research Symposium will provide an opportunity for researchers in these fields to present and share their work.

3. New resource: "A Manual for Integrating Gender into Reproductive Health and HIV Programs: From Commitment to Action"

The Interagency Gender Working Group(IGWG) and the Population Reference Bureau produced this resource for integrated project managers who are working to incorporate gender into their projects/programmes. Attention is given to integrating gender at all stages of the programme cycle; the manual guides managers through the process, from programme design to evaluation.

This Manual will help programme implementers to:

  • Improve the quality of RH/HIV/AIDS services
  • More effectively meet the needs of program participants
  • Make programs sustainable
  • Better inform and empower clients
  • Improve couple communications
  • Improve utilization of services
  • Broaden development impacts and enhance synergies across sectors.
