CONFERENCES/EVENTS/COURSES:
PlusNews Weekly Issue 163, 9 January 2004

1. Youth Forum on HIV/AIDS

The Forum of the United Nations, the African Union and the Pan-African Youth Conference on HIV/AIDS in Africa will be held in Livingstone, Zambia, from 14 to 18 February 2004. This meeting follows on from the first Pan-African Youth Conference on HIV/AIDS in Africa, held in Lusaka, Zambia, in July 2002, and resulted in the Lusaka Declaration.

The second forum will have as its theme "Moving from words to action: Putting African Youth first" and act as a departure point for implementation of the Lusaka Declaration. The main aims of this conference are to address the specific issues of how to implement the Declaration, and to adopt the legal framework of the African Youth League, which will work closely with the African Union.

Up to 500 participants from all over Africa are expected to take part in the forum and invitations have been extended to all African Ministers of Youth, UN personnel, youth workers and youth representatives in each country.

2. Men and Reproductive Health Programmes

The Synergy Project has released USAID's 'Men and Reproductive Health Programmes: Influencing Gender Norms'. This literature review highlights programmes designed to change social norms related to entrenched gender roles. It explains the methodologies each programme employed to achieve this goal and presents findings from evaluations conducted to assess their efficacy.

Some of the programmatic models described were presented at a four-day conference held in the Washington DC area in September 2003, which brought together programme implementers, researchers, evaluators and donors to learn about men and reproductive health programmes around the world that have challenged gender norms.
