2. Community Based Prevention, Management and Treatment of AIDS

Tuition Scholarships are being offered for a workshop on Community Based Prevention, Management and Treatment of HIV/AIDS to be held in Galillee College, Israel from 11 - 29 2004.

The intensive workshop will address the capacity-building requirements of community health workers entrusted with preventing, managing and treating the HIV/AIDS epidemic. The epidemiological, socio-economic and political aspects of the disease will be explored, and the need for special community services stressed. Special focus will be placed on the planning and implementation of financially viable programmes to cope with the epidemic. The Israeli model for preventing, managing and treating HIV/AIDS will be shared.

The program is designed for governmental and NGO professionals responsible for community health projects. These professionals include policy-makers; community-health and social-work supervisors; and workers and activists in the field.

Scholarships, which will cover the tuition expenses of the programme, will be granted to qualified applicants who hold a university degree (or have vast experience in the field of HIV/AIDS) and are fluent in English. Employers will be responsible only for the airfare and a local living expense fee of EUR 2,865, which covers the participant's living expenses while in Israel.

3. Resource for Preventing HIV/AIDS in Those Who Can't Read

"Developing Materials on HIV/AIDS/STIs for Low-Literate Audiences," a new manual produced by Family Health International and the Program for Appropriate Technology and Health (PATH) recognises that many HIV/AIDS concepts are difficult to convey to low-literate audiences. To help reach these audiences, FHI and PATH collaborated on this 153-page manual. It relies heavily on illustrations, is printed in a larger-than-usual typeface, and features simple, clear explanations. The resource is available online at:

4. Analysis of HIV/AIDS in Uganda

As part of its Country AIDS Policy Analysis Project, the AIDS Policy Research Centre at the University of California San Francisco has published a multidisciplinary, fully referenced, peer-reviewed analysis of HIV/AIDS in Uganda. The paper includes sections on epidemiology, political economy, sociobehavioral context, impact, and response - at household, sectoral, and macro levels. It is accompanied by a comparative table of 70 key HIV/AIDS and socio-economic indicators. The analysis is available in Word, PDF, and Text Only formats.
