SOUTH AFRICA: Kid's anti-AIDS drug rollout to continue

JOHANNESBURG, 3 June (PLUSNEWS) - South Africa's paediatric antiretroviral drug programmes will not be suspended, as had been reported in the media earlier this week, health ministry spokesman, Sibani Mngadi confirmed.

However, the ministry had warned participating hospitals to ensure there were adequate drug supplies before enrolling new patients.

Dr Ashraf Coovadia of the University of Witswatersrand Paediatric HIV Working Group told the UN news service PlusNews, that no directive had been received from the ministry to stop placing children on anti-AIDS drugs.

"As far as we're concerned, we will continue to put children on treatment. We have sufficient supplies for our existing patients for the next month or two," Coovadia added.
