ZAMBIA: Stop fighting AIDS through NGOs - Mwanawasa
JOHANNESBURG, 8 March (PLUSNEWS) - Zambian President Levy Mwanawasa has called on donor countries to stop channelling financial resources to tackle HIV/AIDS through NGOs.
He said funding channelled through the NGOs was "stagnating" the fight against HIV/AIDS in the region, as money was not reaching the deserving beneficiaries.
Mwanawasa was quoted by the Pan African News Agency as saying: "Donors are more willing to deal with the civil society, but the money is being spent elsewhere. If a government has misused resources, it will be subjected to the process of accountability, but individual organisations cannot be audited by the auditor-general."
