SOUTH AFRICA: AIDS rates increasing in universities

JOHANNESBURG, 1 March (PLUSNEWS) - The Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) of South Africa has said that one-fifth of the country's university students and a quarter of technikon students were HIV-positive.

According to a local newspaper, Beeld, the HSRC said in its recent 2003 review that it expected these figures to rise to 30 percent and 35 percent respectively by 2005.

The HRSC said it feared the high rate of infection could lead to fewer people joining the education field as teachers, lecturers, academics, administrators and officials.
