MOZAMBIQUE: Free anti-AIDS drugs available to prisoners

[This report does not necessarily reflect the views of the United Nations]

JOHANNESBURG, 8 December (PLUSNEWS) - A catholic organisation, the Santo Egidio Community, is currently providing free antiretroviral drugs to 78 prisoners in Mozambique's Maputo Central Prison.

According to the official news agency AIM, at least 24 of the prisoners had shown a marked improvement in health after receiving the anti-AIDS drugs.

With an increasing number of prisoners now wanting to be tested for HIV, the government's Technical Unit for the Unification of the Prison System is negotiating an agreement with the Ministry of Health to make treatment available in other prisons across the country.
