UNAIDS has launched a simpler, more cost-effective approach to HIV treatment, aimed at simultaneously achieving two holy grails of the AIDS response: drastic reductions in AIDS-related deaths and new HIV infections.

SOUTH AFRICA: Government greenlights three-month supply of ARVs

In a bid to ease pressure on South Africa's over-burdened public health sector, the government has given hospitals and clinics permission to give patients on HIV/AIDS treatment a three-month supply of their antiretroviral medication (ARVs).

1. 18th International AIDS Conference, 18 - 23 July - Vienna, Austria

The International AIDS Conference is the biggest and most high profile gathering for those working in the field of HIV, as well as policy makers, and persons living with HIV. It is a chance to assess where we are, evaluate recent scientific developments and lessons learnt, and collectively chart a course forward.

2. OUTLOOK report 2010, UNAIDS

The new UNAIDS Outlook 2010 report includes a simplified HIV treatment approach called Treatment 2.0, results of a public opinion poll on perceptions of the AIDS epidemic, findings from a study of HIV prevalence among young people and an economic analysis outlining the critical need for donor countries to sustain AIDS investments.

VACANCIES

1. Programme Manager for HIV, Hygiene & Sanitation, Population Services International - Juba, Sudan

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee implementation of all HIV/AIDS and Hygiene and Sanitation programmes, including sales and distribution in four areas in Southern Sudan, including Juba, Yei, Wau and Malakal
  • Provide technical oversight and strategic direction for programme implementation and development
  • Responsible for all grants funding these programme areas, including budget oversight
  • Manage, mentor and coach programme staff responsible for implementation
  • Compile, review and prepare financial, technical and other reports as required by donors and PSI/Washington
  • Enforce field office administrative policies, and ensure contractual compliance
  • Prepare and supervise the implementation of annual marketing, sales and distribution plans
  • In collaboration with the Research and Communications Department, coordinate programme-related research activities, including product coverage and distribution surveys, project baseline and end-line surveys and qualitative studies to inform communication strategy
  • Establish and maintain new partnerships with private and institutional distributors

Requirements:

  • Relevant post-graduate degree
  • Minimum two years of programme management experience
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multi-sectoral programmes with diverse funding streams
  • Budget and contractual compliance experience
  • Familiarity with international health, development issues, and the international donor community
  • Knowledge of social marketing
  • Exceptional and established diplomatic skills
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Knowledge of USAID/PEPFAR requirements is a significant advantage
  • Experience with social mobilization programmes in Africa is an advantage
