CONFERENCES/ EVENTS/ RESEARCH/ RESOURCES:
PlusNews Weekly Issue 245, 5 August 2005

1. LIVING 2005 Conference postponed

The LIVING 2005 Conference, originally scheduled for 9 - 13 October 2005 in Lima, Peru, will now take place from 12 - 16 March 2006.

The Living with HIV Partnership has taken the difficult decision to postpone this important conference, due to challenges in securing resources. The partnership is a new consortium of organisations committed to the empowerment of people living with HIV/AIDS and their communities.

The Partnership consists of the Global Network of People living with HIV/AIDS (GNP+), the International Community of Women Living with HIV/AIDS (ICW), the International Council of AIDS Service Organisations (ICASO), the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), UNAIDS, and the World Health Organisation (WHO).

The LIVING 2006 conference will bring together the International Conference for People Living with HIV/AIDS and the Home and Community Care Conference under the Living with HIV Partnership banner. The meeting will highlight the important role of home and community care in scaling up access to care, treatment and support, while reaffirming that people living with HIV/AIDS, their families and communities are at the heart of the AIDS response.

More information and new registration deadlines will be available shortly at the conference web site: www.living2005.org.

2. Psychosocial support for children

Horizons, a global HIV/AIDS research initiative implemented by the Population Council in partnership with the International Centre for Research on Women, has released their latest newsletter focusing on psychosocial support for children.

The publication describes the findings of Horizons studies in Zimbabwe and Rwanda that examine the psychosocial wellbeing of orphans and vulnerable children, and ways to increase their ability to adapt and cope in the face of adversity. Given the traumatic effects of grief, loss, and other hardships faced by these children, there is increasing recognition of the importance of programmes to help them strengthen their social and emotional support systems.

The newsletter also deals with strengthening youth-headed households in Rwanda and highlights ways to increase voluntary counselling and testing (VCT) uptake and satisfaction among youth in Kampala, Uganda.
