1. Training course on HIV/AIDS programme management

The AIDS Projects Management Group (APMG) will run a training course on HIV/AIDS programmes management in Bali, Indonesia from 30 August to 8 September 2005. The course will include strategic and programme planning; integrating monitoring and evaluation into programme management; harm-reduction principles and practices; preventing HIV transmission among injecting drug users; HIV testing and treatment; and care and support of HIV positive injecting drug users.

The course will provide learning through participatory and experiential field visits. It is designed to increase the capacity of agencies running HIV/AIDS programmes, and support the development of strong and sustainable relationships between agencies in the HIV/AIDS response at national, provincial and local levels.

Course fees are US $2,950 and the deadline for registering is 31 July 2005.

2. TAC National Congress

From 23 to 25 September 2005, the Treatment Action Campaign (TAC) will hold its third National Congress in Cape Town, South Africa. In preparation, Provincial Congresses will take place in all provinces where TAC has a membership base.

The congress will offer an opportunity to evaluate the progress of the HIV/AIDS/STD Strategic Plan For South Africa, 2000-2005, as it has reached its final year. The national meeting is also significant because it provides an opportunity for the organisation to reflect on its past work and discuss strategies for moving forward. At this congress new TAC leadership - National and Provincial Executive Committees - will be elected through a democratic process, in which its members will participate.

The chosen theme for this congress is "Building Women and PLWA Leadership for a People's Health Service".

Provincial Congresses:

Eastern Cape: 25 - 26 July
Mpumalanga: 6 - 7 August
KwaZulu-Natal: 12 - 14 August
Gauteng: 13 August
Limpopo: 20 - 21 August
Western Cape: 26 - 27 August

3. ARVs in Resource-Poor Settings

Eyes Wide Open or Eyes Wide Shut? Antiretroviral Therapy in Resource-Poor Countries: Illusions and Realities.

The landscape for antiretroviral (ARV) therapy in resource-poor settings has recently changed considerably with the availability of generic drugs, the drastic price reduction of brand drugs, and the simplification of treatment. However, such cost reductions, while allowing the implementation of large-scale donor programmes, have yet to render treatment accessible and possible in the general population.

Addressing the problem of HIV treatment in high prevalence/high caseload countries may require redefining the problem as a public-health mass-therapy programme, rather than a multiplication of clinical situations.
