PlusNews Weekly Issue 211, 10 December 2004

1. Spotlight on MTCT

The Science and Development Network recently released a 'spotlight' on mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) of HIV, which brings together news, opinion and information on the latest research and international guidelines on the prevention of MTCT.

The spotlight contains:
  • a comprehensive introduction to issues around breast-feeding and drug therapy, including an overview of current guidelines on antiretrovirals
  • essential background reading on the basic science of MTCT and its prevention, as well as antiretrovirals, microbicides and vaccine development
  • up-to-date news, features and opinion articles on MTCT, and links to key organisations in the field

The spotlight is a new addition to their HIV/AIDS 'quick guide', which charts recent research developments and indicates promising new avenues of treatment by bringing together topical coverage and background resources. It also includes a further two spotlights on vaccines and microbicides in developing countries.
