1. Calls for requests for the supply of anti-AIDS medication to worthy programmes in developing countries

Viread, a once-a-day antiretroviral medication from Gilead Sciences to be used in combination therapy, is now available through the Gilead Access Programme at a no-profit price in every country in Africa and 15 additional countries in other parts of the world classified as "least developed" by the UN.

Gilead will now be able to make the drug available to any private or public programme treating people with HIV/AIDS in 68 nations at US $24.71 for a 30-day supply, or $0.82 per day.

Programmes can submit request forms via the internet or by email, mail or fax. The company is prepared to ship Viread to qualifying programmes as soon as request forms are reviewed and approved.

2. 'Youth-Net and Counselling' Conference on Youth, Children and HIV/AIDS

'Youth Net and Counselling' (YONECO), a NGO dealing in issues of youth, children and women in Malawi is coordinating and will host this conference from 24 to 27 August 2004 at the Sun and Sand Holiday Resort on the shores of lake Malawi, with support from the Humanist Institute for Cooperation with Developing Countries (HIVOS).

The conference was originally intended for partners, but has been extended to other organisations to encourage networking and coordination.

The organisations or individuals should meet their own travel costs and pay a conference fee of US $600 that includes registration fees, airport transfers, accommodation, meals, conference materials and participation in various exchange activities.

Conference sub-themes include:
Youth, poverty and HIV/AIDS; Youth, culture, sexuality and HIV/AIDS; Young girls, teen pregnancy and HIV/AIDS; Role of youth clubs and organisations in responding to HIV/AIDS; Youth, AIDS and edutainment; Young people in care and support in HIV/AIDS epidemic; Child prostitution, HIV/AIDS and child trafficking; Child rights, HIV/AIDS and child abuse.

Conference registration is due on 1 August 2004.

3. SafAIDS discussion forum on safer breast feeding

The Zvitambo project conducted research which was the subject of a recent SafAIDS discussion. The study concluded that up to three months, "mixed breast-feeding doubles the risk of postnatal transmission or death, compared to exclusive breast-feeding." For this reason, exclusive breast-feeding is recommended.
