1. Finalists of the World Bank Southern Africa Development Marketplace

The proposals submitted to the Southern Africa Development Marketplace by the finalists. The World Bank and its development partners award start-up funds to projects that bring people and institutions together and have the best promise of moving from concept to concrete results. This year's theme "HIV/AIDS: Turning Ideas Into Action" brought nearly 300 proposals from across Botswana, Lesotho, Namibia, South Africa and Swaziland. Read the top 36 proposals (an MS Word document) by going to:

2. Call for expressions of interest for the 2nd South African AIDS Conference

The International Convention Centre in Durban will again host the 2nd SA AIDS Conference scheduled for 7 to 10 June 2005.

Prospective participants, speakers, media representatives, exhibitors and sponsors are invited to express their interest in participating in the 2nd SA AIDS Conference via the official conference website:
www.sa-aidsconference.com for inclusion in updates on this anticipated and most significant event.

"The first South African AIDS Conference [in 2003] aimed at achieving nothing less than providing a comprehensive, holistic and precisely relevant programme for all stakeholders, including researchers, community representatives, businesses and the media. Due to being a highly politicised and emotional subject, the fitting conference slogan 'Dira Sengwe', meaning to 'Take Action', was attained, as the conference attracted national and international focus with the impressive number of delegates: a landmark 462 speakers, 76 exhibitions, more than 200 media representatives and a Guinness World Record for the longest ribbon for a social cause - a 2,39 km Old Mutual AIDS ribbon."

For further detail, the Conference Secretariat can be reached on

3. AED Announces HIV/AIDS Anti-Stigma Programme

AED's HIV/AIDS Anti-Stigma Initiative addresses stigma in the country and examines the impact at local level by working with five community-based organizations to create strategies to combat it. AED recently awarded these organizations $180,000 each to develop and implement 18-month programmes to tackle HIV/AIDS-related stigma in their communities.
