AFRICA: Bible commentary tackles AIDS
[This report does not necessarily reflect the views of the United Nations]
JOHANNESBURG, 7 July (PLUSNEWS) - African scholars have produced a new Bible commentary, covering issues such as female circumcision, HIV/AIDS and homosexuality.
The commentary, produced by an umbrella group of African evangelical churches, aims to make the Bible more relevant to Africans by using local proverbs and applying its teachings to contemporary problems on the continent.
"[It is] an explanation of the whole Bible, as seen through the eyes of African scholars who respect the integrity of the text and use African proverbs, metaphors and stories to make it speak to African believers," Reuters quoted the group's general editor, Tokunboh Adeyemo, as saying in the book's introduction.
The commentary remained conservative on homosexuality, which it said was "a sin ... abnormal, unnatural and a perversion".
