AFRICA: Concern as Global Fund weighs future

[This report does not necessarily reflect the views of the United Nations]

JOHANNESBURG, 28 April (PLUSNEWS) - AIDS activists were on Thursday concerned about the ability of the Global Fund on AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria to expand its reach over coming years.

This emerged as the Fund's governing board convened a two-day meeting on whether to solicit more programmes or limit its scope to the current 350 projects.

Development charity, ActionAid, said failure by the Fund to announce a new round of grants could "fatally stall" the Group of Eight most industrialised nations' goal of ensuring universal access to anti-AIDS treatment by 2010.

However, the Fund's external relations director, Christoph Benn, told Reuters it was "unthinkable to end support to the more than 1 million people on antiretrovirals and other treatments."

The governing board - which is comprised of donors, recipient countries, health advocates and the private sector - was set to make its decision known on Friday.
