KENYA: AIDS awareness hits the highway

[This report does not necessarily reflect the views of the United Nations]

JOHANNESBURG, 26 January (PLUSNEWS) - The US has launched a billboard campaign to promote HIV/AIDS awareness along Kenya's Mombasa/Nairobi highway, the Angolan news agency, ANGOP reported on Wednesday.

William Bellamy, US ambassador to Kenya, commented, "This campaign is also part of a larger regional programme along the transportation corridors of Eastern and Central Africa that starts right here in Kenya."

He said the initiative was part of his government's close collaboration with Kenyan health authorities in the fight against the pandemic.

Bellamy cited a recent joint study by the Universities of Nairobi and Manitoba in the US, saying an estimated 10 percent of new HIV infections occurred annually along this major transborder route.
