AFRICA: Thailand delivers on condom pledge

[This report does not necessarily reflect the views of the United Nations]

JOHANNESBURG, 24 January (PLUSNEWS) - The UN Development Programme (UNDP) is to ship 50,000 condoms recently donated by Thailand in an effort to help prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS in seven African countries.

"This shipment is an expression of Thailand's interest in working with Africa to halt this [pandemic]," Joana Merlin-Scholtes, UNDP resident Representative for Thailand, told reporters in Bangkok.

The condom pledge was made during a workshop last year in Kenya, when African and visiting Thai AIDS experts agreed to collaborate on anti-AIDS interventions.

Burkina Faso, Nigeria and Uganda are among the countries that will benefit from the condom donation.
