SOUTH AFRICA: Nestlé to jack-up infant formula supply

[This report does not necessarily reflect the views of the United Nations]

JOHANNESBURG, 19 August (PLUSNEWS) - International food and beverage company Nestlé is to provide a full report to the South African government on how it is addressing challenges in supplying infant formula used in the fight against HIV/AIDS to public health facilities.

This follows a recent meeting between the national health department and Nestlé representatives in the capital, Pretoria.

The company - sole supplier of the infant formula, Nan Pelargon, provided by the government to HIV-positive mothers as part of an effort to lower the risk of mother-to-child transmission of HIV through breastfeeding - has experienced delivery challenges due to an internal industrial action earlier this year.

Health department spokesman Sibani Mngadi told the official BuaNews agency that a complete report on how Nestlé was handling the matter would be provided within two weeks.
