ANGOLA: Global Fund millions to tackle AIDS, TB and malaria

[This report does not necessarily reflect the views of the United Nations]

JOHANNESBURG, 27 May (PLUSNEWS) - The Global AIDS Fund has announced plans to release US $59 million to assist Angola in its fight against HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis (TB) and malaria.

Local Fund manager Jorge Romero told the Angola Press Agency that $25 million would be allocated to malaria programmes, $27 million to anti-AIDS efforts, and the remaining $7 million would be used to tackle TB.

Distribution of mosquito nets and antimalaria vaccines, TB medication, as well as AIDS prevention and treatment are expected to be increased in 59 communities as a result of the pledge.

The Fund's announcement comes hot on the heels of a $125 million World Bank agreement to address the impact of the three diseases, and bolster social service delivery and emergency preparedness.
