AFRICA: Multimillion AIDS programme approved for refugees
[This report does not necessarily reflect the views of the United Nations]
JOHANNESBURG, 7 October (PLUSNEWS) - A sub-regional health programme for refugees in the West African countries of Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone and Cote d'Ivoire will help them attain the UN Millennium Development Goal of curbing the spread of HIV/AIDS by 2015.
A US $3.4 million grant approved by the African Development Fund (ADF), a concessional window of the African Development Bank, will be channelled into prevention capabilities, the control and treatment of sexually transmitted infections and coordinating HIV/AIDS programmes.
According to a recently issued communique, the four countries have collectively pledged to combat the AIDS pandemic, which has become a major development issue.
The project is to begin in January 2005 and run over a three-year period.
