AFRICA: Denmark to allocate additional AIDS funds

JOHANNESBURG, 6 October (PLUSNEWS) - Although Denmark already directs 60 percent of its bilateral aid to Africa, it promised on Tuesday to allocate additional funds to tackle HIV and AIDS.

Agence France-Presse quoted the Danish Prime Minister, Anders Fogh Rasmussen, as saying: "AIDS constitutes the largest individual threat to the populations of Africa. The fight against AIDS is one of the areas where heightened efforts will need to be paid for."

The Prime Minister said his government would also do more to help refugees on the continent and urged other wealthy nations to channel more aid to Africa, to avoid it becoming "a lost continent".
