TANZANIA: Two million people living with HIV/AIDS - report

JOHANNESBURG, 16 September (PLUSNEWS) - Out of an estimated 2 million people living with HIV/AIDS in Tanzania, approximately 1.7 million are aged between 15 and 49, the National 2004 AIDS Control Programme report has revealed.

Deo Mmari, the permanent secretary in the President's Office, has urged greater involvement by local government leaders to prevent the pandemic from spreading.

A local newspaper, The Guardian, quoted Mmari as saying, "We need a framework for coordination and partnership between central and local government, and between those who control resources and provide services."
