SOUTH AFRICA: AIDS drug tender short list revealed

JOHANNESBURG, 3 August (PLUSNEWS) - Pharmaceutical firms short-listed for South Africa's lucrative anti-AIDS drug tender have until the end of the week to submit their quotes.
According to a local newspaper, Business Day, independent pharmaceutical industry sources spilled the beans by naming the companies, which until now had been kept secret by the government.
During the three-year tender the manufacturers are expected to supply anti-AIDS drugs for the treatment of about 102,000 people in year one, increasing to about 180,000 by year three.
The short-listed companies are Abbot, Aspen Pharmacare, Boehringer Ingelheim, Bristol Meyers Squibb, CiplaMedpro, Enaleni, GlaxoSmithKline, MSD, the South African subsidiary of Merck Sharpe Dohme, Pharma Marketing International, and Thembalami, the joint venture between Adcock Ingram and Indian pharmaceutical giant Ranbaxy.
