MALI: Cash injection for HIV/AIDS programme

JOHANNESBURG, 1 June (PLUSNEWS) - Mali's national HIV/AIDS programme will benefit from a US $25.5 million grant over five years from the International Development Association, the World Bank's soft-loan agency, the Pan African News Agency reported.

According to the ministry of health, the programme's three components - prevention and sensitisation, screening and advising, and access to drugs - would enhance the capacity of health workers in tackling the pandemic.

The project also aims to mobilise civil society and private sector stakeholders by encouraging the establishment of a coalition against the disease.

Research shows that Mali has a 1.7 percent prevalence rate, suggesting that some 104,000 of its almost 12 million people are living with HIV/AIDS.
