AFRICA: Crisis-level HIV/AIDS response urged
JOHANNESBURG, 31 March (PLUSNEWS) - Delegates at the recent National HIV/AIDS Update Conference, held in Miami, United States, have called for a crisis-level response in tackling the global HIV/AIDS pandemic.
According to a local newspaper, the Miami Herald, some 2,000 AIDS experts, health-care providers, mental-health professionals and HIV-positive people sought to shock world leaders, governments and local groups into action.
World Health Organisation HIV/AIDS Director, Dr Paulo Teixeira, said urgent funding was needed to help the 3 million people who died each year because they could not afford anti-AIDS drugs.
Teixeira said: "We simply cannot go on watching millions die, while we have the technical expertise, the drugs, the political commitment and unprecedented, yet still insufficient, financial resources to roll out drug treatments."
