SOUTH AFRICA: MRC announces traditional anti-AIDS medicine trials
JOHANNESBURG, 31 March (PLUSNEWS) - The South African Medical Research Council (MRC) plans to embark on a series of anti-AIDS human trials using seven traditional medicine mixtures, a local newspaper, Beeld, reported.
Dr Gilbert Matsabisa, the MRC's indigenous knowledge systems unit manager, said preliminary studies had already been conducted on animals and an application was submitted to the ethics council for tests to be carried out on humans.
However, Matsabisa was not able to divulge the ingredients that make up the mixtures.
The first phase of the trials will be conducted on healthy, HIV-negative people, with second and third phases conducted on HIV-positive people.
