[This report does not necessarily reflect the views of the United Nations]

JOHANNESBURG, 19 February (PLUSNEWS) - Swaziland's King Mswati III has declared a humanitarian disaster due to the effects of drought and HIV/AIDS, Reuters reported.

Speaking on the king's behalf, Prime Minister Themba Dlamini said HIV/AIDS, drought and land degradation had created a "serious humanitarian crisis" in the country.

The Minister said: "On behalf of His Majesty's government, I appeal to the international community to assist and make whatever resources available in order to respond effectively to the challenges the country is facing."
