CAMEROON: Rights of HIV-positive people discussed

[This report does not necessarily reflect the views of the United Nations]

JOHANNESBURG, 20 August (PLUSNEWS) - A five day workshop to protect the rights of people living with HIV/AIDS (PWA) in Francophone-Africa is currently underway in Cameroon, the local Cameroon Tribune reported on Tuesday.

Human rights NGO, "Association Presse Jeune", said the objective of the workshop was to sensitise African governments, civil society, and other social groups on the issue.

President of Presse Jeune, Thomas Tchetmi, said the rights of some PWAs were often trampled on and their private health conditions exposed, while others were deprived of jobs and faced public humiliation.

Tchetmi called for strengthened AIDS education programmes through mass media campaigns, and the cooperation of governments with the UN and international health agencies.

Statistics show that behavioural changes have occurred in parts of the continent where public education campaigns have been held.
