UGANDA: President to be presented with anti-HIV/AIDS award

[This report does not necessarily reflect the views of the United Nations]

NAIROBI, 5 September (PLUSNEWS) - Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni was to receive an award on Thursday for his leadership in the fight against HIV/AIDS, Xinhua news agency has reported. According to the report, UNAIDS Executive Director Peter Piot was scheduled to present Museveni with an award of Distinguished Leadership Excellence. The announcement was made in a statement issued by the Uganda Business Coalition (UBC) on Tuesday.

The report said that last week government officials disclosed that the HIV infection rate among women attending antenatal clinics in Uganda had declined further, from 6.8 percent at the end of 1999 to 6.1 percent at the end of 2000. The UBC said the award to Museveni from doctors all over the world was for his exemplary leadership that had made Uganda both a continental and global role model in fighting the HIV/AIDS scourge.
