UGANDA: Displaced youngsters to benefit from AIDS programme

JOHANNESBURG, 21 September (PLUSNEWS) - The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) has launched a pilot programme to support displaced children affected by HIV/AIDS in conflict- ravaged northern Uganda.
According to an IOM press release on Tuesday, two local NGO are to implement the programme by providing educational and income-generating support to 262 children in camps for internally displaced persons (IDPs).
Children and young people in the area are at high risk of abuse and HIV/AIDS transmission, due to the large number of Ugandan soldiers and members of the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) rebels fighting in the north, which has raised the HIV/AIDS prevalence rate to between 7 percent and 12 percent above the national average.
At least 1.4 million people are living in northern Uganda's IDP camps where lack of food and social services have compounded the impact of HIV/AIDS.
