GLOBAL: Straight Talk with Dr Zeda Rosenberg, CEO of the International Partnership for Microbicides

There were cheers and some tears at the International AIDS Conference in Vienna in July when delegates heard the news that a clinical trial in South Africa, had found a vaginal gel containing the antiretroviral drug, tenofovir, was 39 percent effective at reducing women's risk of contracting HIV during sex.

SOUTH AFRICA: Melanie, "If you won't test, I won't do 'it'"

Melanie grew up in a large, religious family in the South African seaside city of Port Elizabeth. She talked to IRIN/PlusNews about how HIV touched her life at a young age, and how education and loss gave her not only the ability to start her own HIV organization east of Johannesburg, but also to navigate HIV in her own discordant relationship.

1. International Conference on Opportunistic Pathogens in AIDS, 27-29 September - New Delhi, India

Hosted by the All India Institute of Medical Science, the conference will tackle AIDS and AIDS-associated opportunistic infections such as non-tubercular mycobacteriosis, extremely drug resistant (XDR) tuberculosis, leishmaniasis, and co-pathogens like herpes and hepatitis viruses.

2. Quality assurance for male circumcision services training package (2010) - Clearing House on Male Circumcision for HIV Prevention

This training package provides programme and facility managers with guidance and materials to assist them in conducting workshops on quality assurance and to strengthen their capacity to facilitate the implementation of safe, high-quality services in male circumcision for HIV prevention.

VACANCIES

1. Migration Health Programme Consultant, International Organization for Migration (IOM) - Juba, Sudan

Responsibilities:

  • Overall programme and staff management in Southern Sudan
  • Identify health programming opportunities in Southern Sudan
  • Attend Health Coordination meetings, epidemiological surveillance meetings and relevant workshops
  • Attend and provide technical support to UN and interagency working group meetings and other forums for Southern Sudan, where identified as a priority for the programmes
  • Reporting, including narrative and financial, as per IOM and Global Fund and Common Humanitarian Fund guidelines, and on quality of activities undertaken
  • Develop and implement the output monitoring framework to facilitate timely reporting and for data analysis with a view towards peer reviewed publication
  • Monitor programme progress including the adherence to work plan, timeframes, project log frame and outputs.

Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate degree in social sciences, health or related field required
  • Postgraduate degree required, preferably in public health or related development field
  • At least three years' experience in the field of health programming, with expertise on HIV/AIDS
  • Demonstrated experience in managing programmes and staff
  • Demonstrated experience in programme development, including resource mobilization
  • Work and/or academic experience focusing on migrant/mobile and/or HIV key population groups preferred
  • Work in the Southern Sudan context an asset, including knowledge of government structures
  • Excellent English communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Excellent organizational and multi-tasking skills
  • Demonstrated ability to identify, approach, and coordinate with stakeholders of diverse backgrounds and levels of expertise

2. Programme Funding Officer, HIV and Health, Christian Aid - London, the United Kingdom or Nairobi, Kenya

Responsibilities:

  • Provide technical advice and support to HIV, malaria and other poverty-related health programmes globally by working closely with other HIV and malaria staff, our country office staff and our partners
  • Secure funding from institutional donors and large foundations
  • Develop and write convincing proposals with accompanying budgets

Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of evidence-based HIV, malaria and other poverty related health programmes
  • Versatile multi-tasker who can juggle priorities and work to a range of deadlines
  • Flexible and adaptable in the context of a developing corporate strategy on HIV and community health and an evolving team
  • Experience in developing proposals and managing contracts within an international NGO
  • Familiar with donors like the European Union, the US Agency for International Development and the UK's Department for International Development
